Clash of Rhyfles, force assembly

I have always kind of adored the Quar model range, but has been unable to partake in it due to shipping distance and such nonsense. But now that Wargames Atlantic is involved I can get my mitts on the lovely buggers too. I realized that there is no 'right' way to build the box set, and no clear instructions, and because planning things is almost a hobby of its own for me, I wanted to break down and share how I went about it.

Squad Size

The box contains 24 Quar; 12 Coftryans and 12 Crusaders. While going for two 12 model forces, it eventually made more size for me to go for 10 models a side. Ten quars is the default squad size for the non-skirmish scale of the game, it is also the size of the example squads in the Rhyfler's Pocketbook. So it made a lot of sense for me to aim for 10 models a side, plus it gives me the bonus of having 2 extra models for each side I can use for conversions or builds down the line.

Squad Composition

The Crusaders have 1 Yawdryl leading the squad, 6 Rhyflers armed with the Bogen semi-automatic rifle, and 3 Rhyflers acting as supporting fire with the Ryshi heavy rifle

The Coftyrans have 1 Yawdryl too, 6 Rhyflers with the Harlech bolt-action, a Rhyfler carrying the Cryfen LMG and 2 escorts with the Harlech as support for them.

Points-wise they are about equal, and still within the 200 - 300 point force size suggested for starting out. But since I am lowballing the amount by only making 10 models a side, I wanted to find some upgrades to beef them out. The pocketbook comes with some extra profiles beyond the Yawdryls and Riflers with different weapons kits above. There are rules for making is-Caertans (company officers), Sharpshooters and a Crusader LMG too. The choice was pretty easy in the end, is-Caertans and Crusader LMG have equipment that isnt on the sprue, whole the Sharpshooters use the same weapons as their fellow Rhyflers, they just happen to be better shots with them.

Final Lists

Crusaders (284 points)
4x Rhyfler with Bogen (25pts)
3x Rhyfler with Ryshi (28pts)
2x Sharpshot. with Bogen (35pts, max 2)
1x Yawdryl with Bogen (30pts, max 1)

Coftyrans (285 points)
6x Rhyfler with Harlech (25pts)
2x Sharpshot. with Harlech (35pts, max 2)
1x Rhyfler with Cryfen LMG (32pts, max 1)
1x Yawdryl with Doru (33pts, max 1)

The Builds

Rhyflers with Bogen. As all units have access to throwing grenades, I decided to make it one of the distinguishing features for the rank and file, since everybody else has something going on.

Rhyflers with Ryshi. Easily identifiable by their heavy scoped and bayonetted weapons.

Sharpshooters with Bogen. They were a slight challenge since they are equipped just as the standard troops, but I decided to go with them always aiming down sight, having camouflage on their helmet and a wrapped gun barrel.

Yawdryl with a Bogen. A slight challenge to make stand out as they're carrying a weapon also used by two other profiles. Here I used the cloth cap head, and reposed a spare arm to give the impression of them issuing out hand signals.

Rhyflers with Harlech. Like with the other standard riflers I have given them grenades where possible, but they also have another feature I achieved through my bits box: they all carry knives or attached bayonets. While the weapon model might now show it, they have higher Might than their crusader counterparts. Holstered or attached blades helps hammer that point home.

The Cryfen LMG is easily spottable due to it being a unique weapon, but I went slightly beyond, bulking up its magazine bag with a satchel from the sprue, and making the 6th harlech carrying rhyfler handing over a magazine. The Cryfen is more effective when an ally is in base to base to assist with loading it, because of that, I wanted to make a designated loader to break up the 6 otherwise pretty samey rhyflers.

Sharpshooters with Harlech. As with their crusader counterpart they are aiming down sight, have a wrapped barrel and this time a beanie. They are also deliberately not carrying knifes, since they lack the Might of the rank and file Harlech carriers.

Yawdryl with a Doru. Attatching a pointing hand to the grenade throwing arm gives a more dynamic pose for calling out directions, and a set of WWI binoculars from another set gives him another defining feature.

So that is all my little pals, hope this was helpful, informative or at the least enjoyable to read. Have a good one!
